I’ve been experimenting a LOT with low carb, keto friendly shakes lately. I’ve always loved the ease and goodness of a nutritious smoothie or shake, and I drank a lot of them prior to going low carb.
Before switching to low carb, my standard smoothie was a banana, 1/2 cup home-made plain yogurt, fresh spinach or beet greens from my garden (frozen spinach in the winter months), and either frozen blueberries or frozen strawberries. My kids still drink one of these for breakfast and one for their bedtime snack every day.
Now that I’m cutting the carbs though, I’ve been trying all sorts of shakes and smoothie variations to find my favorites. This one here is my current favorite. It’s delicious, filling, full of micro-nutrients and greens goodness, VERY low in carbs, and immensely satisfying.
3/4 cup of water (I use R/O filtered water)
3 Large Strawberries (I use frozen but fresh is fine)
1 cube of frozen spinach (or fresh greens from the garden if in season)
pinch of stevia (see photo. DON’T over-do it with the stevia. It’s VERY strong stuff).
5g of L-Glutamine
1/2 scoop of strawberry protein powder
1 large egg yolk (or XL)
1/4 cup of 35% Whipping Cream
1/4 cup of water (I add this last to rinse out the measuring scoop)
Add 3/4 cup of water to blender jug with strawberries and spinach (or greens)
Add pinch of stevia
Add 5g scoop of L-Glutamine
Add 1/2 scoop of strawberry protein powder
Add egg yolk
Add 1/4 cup of 35% whipping cream and then 1/4 cup of water.
Blend thoroughly again. (I add the cream and blend again after the initial ingredients are blended so that the cream doesn’t get overly “whipped”.)
Pour into large glass and enjoy!
I use Kirkland Frozen Strawberries from Costco
I use Great Value Chopped Spinach Nuggets (Frozen) from Walmart (convenient and in nuggets rather than a large, frozen block)
I use Better Stevia by NOW Foods.
I use NOW Foods L-Glutamine Powder.
I’m finishing up an older jug of Gold Standard Natural 100% Whey (Strawberry flavor) although I have switched to MetRX for my most recent purchase of protein as the Gold Standard has reportedly had a recipe change that is not favorable.
I shot all the photos in this post with my Panasonic G7 Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera (MILC) which I can’t recommend enough! It EVEN shoots 4K Video!!!
